Description | Survey of stream bank and bed physical conditions and sediment supply conducted along 6.6 miles of San Antonio Creek, a tributary of the Petaluma River, during September through November 2000. The Study Reach was divided into ten component reaches based on morphological changes. Data on all factors were continuously measured within the 6.6 mile Study Reach, except for a 0.4 mile reach where access was denied (Gap Reach) and a 0.4 mile diversion ditch at the downstream end of the Study Reach. Data pertaining to sediment supply from the Gap Reach were extrapolated from sub-reaches of similar morphology. Note that 2.5 miles of the upper mainstem channel have not been studied. Purpose | To transfer the approach and methodology of SFEI's Watershed Science Approach (WSA) to staff of the Southern Sonoma Resource Conservation District in order to advance their understanding of watershed processes and the effects of land use practices on San Antonio Creek since the time of European settlement. The time period for landscape response to non-native land uses in the San Antonio watershed was estimated to be the last 160 years. |
Use Constraints | Note that volumes of sediment supply reported in graphs for San Antonio Creek do not represent the total sediment supply from the mainstem channel because 2.5 miles of the upper mainstem channel have not been studied. |
Supplemental Information | Due to the limited scope of this project, a full written report of the findings has not been completed and much of the study is only represented as graphs and tables without explanatory text. Data were originally collected under the supervision of the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) for a contract with the Southern Sonoma County Rural Conservation District. |
