Aquatic Inverts: Ten Most Abundant Species Below ATT Spill |

    |
Caption:  This chart shows the ten most abundant taxa of aquatic insects collected using a kick net on the lower Garcia River below the ATT drilling mud spill. The below-spill sample contrasts markedly with the above-spill sample (see previous Topic), with two species dominating the sample and other taxa showing much lower relative abundance. This community could be characterized as exhibiting less "evenness". Higgins (1995) suggested that the drilling muds had eliminated all net spinning insects and those with dense bristles or hairs, which would have trapped the fine clay particles. Data collected by John Lee on behalf of Friends of the Garcia River.
