Caption:  Floating weekly average water temperatures in the mainstem Mattole River at Petrolia (Gage Station) exceeded optimal conditions for salmonids for the entire summer of 2001. Values exceeding 66 degrees in June indicate thermal problems for migrating smolts. The thermograph was placed near the Petrolia gauging station approximately 75 yds downstream from the Petrolia Bridge. Data was collected and analyzed by the NCRWQCB.
