Fish: Estuary Beach Trawl Sample Totals 1996 |
|
Caption: This Chart shows the various species caught in the Russian River estuary using an otter trawl net at four sites from July to October 1996. Prickly sculpin, staghorn sculpin, starry flounder, threespine stickle back and shiner surfperch are common estuarine species in northern California and together comprised 81% of the trawl catch. Marine fish like ling cod, perch, Cabezon, sole and flounders often use estuaries as nurseries because there is ample food, but less predation than in the ocean.
