Fish: Estuary Juvenile Steelhead Length 1997 May-November |
|
Caption: This chart shows the length of the juvenile steelhead in seining samples collected by Merritt Smith Consulting in the Russian River estuary from May through November 1997. Fish ranged in length from 50 mm to over 235 mm. Young of the year steelhead, those less than 100 mm or 4 inches in length, were prevalent in the 1997 sample whereas no fish less than 80 mm were captured in 1996 or 1998. Two year old steelhead (>150 mm/ 6 in.) and three year olds (>200 mm/8 in) were present in 1997 samples as they were in 1996 and 1998. Size classes are shown in different colors: young of the year are blue; yearlings light blue; two year old steelhead dark green; and three year olds in light green. The abundance of older age steelhead is expected in the estuary as fish have moved downstream and are staged for ocean entry. See InfoLinks for more information on sampling methods and findings of study by Merritt Smith Consulting (1998) conducted for Sonoma County.
