KRIS Russian River: Meta Information Page

This page contains detailed information about a data set in KRIS, including where the original data reside and how to contact the sources for the data. Data sets are linked to the appropriate page by means of the Meta Identifier. Many data sets can be linked to same page by sharing the same Meta Identifier.

Meta IdentifierFishEst_Nielsen
Type of DataFisheries and Invertebrate data collected in the Russian River estuary in 1992 and 1993
OriginatorSonoma County
DescriptionDr. Jennifer Nielsen directed and implemented fish collection strategies for the Russian River estuary fish sampling program to determine the effect of breaching on the fish community. A number of different techniques were used including beach seines, deep water otter trawl nets, hook and line, benthic pipe traps and both backpack and boat electrofishing.

Maint. and Update Freq.Data collected annually with seines and trawls from 1996-2000
Serial NameRussian estuary fish
PurposeTo understand the effects of breaching the estuary on salmonids and other sensitive species and on the water quality of the estuary.
Data Quality InformationDifferent sampling techniques have different bias as they sample different depths and habitat types.
Use ConstraintsNo population estimates can be calculated from these data and only samples using similar methods can be compared between years.
Supplemental InformationRussian River Estuary Study 1992-1993 published by Sonoma County(1994) actually includes two section, one hydrology by Phil Williams and Associates and the other on fisheries and limnology by Dr. Jennifer Nielsen and Theo Light.
